My Grief

Updated: Mar 26

“So she said, ‘Could I forgive him? I’m not sure I understand the question. But the answer is no.’

He nodded.

‘I don’t wish him any harm, and I’m glad I’ll never see him again. I don’t enjoy being reminded of him.’

– Glory discussing with Jack her past relationship in the book Home by Marilyee Robinson

I’ve been focused on the gravity of forgiveness and grace. But I continue to struggle with forgiveness on one thing. The mental illness ruined the entirety of his childhood. That cannot be undone. I am angry at myself. I should have protected him. I should have done better. I continue to grieve on this with minimal progress.

Check out the amazing series of books from Pulitzer Prize winning author Marilynne Robinson - Gilead, Home, Lila and Jack. Robinson's Gilead series explores complex themes of grace, forgiveness, and human imperfection with remarkable sensitivity. In her works, characters often grapple with past failures and the long shadows they cast.
